HIMMATWALA-REVIEW

Director:Sajid khan
Stars:Ajay Devgan,Tamannaah,Mahesh Manjrekar
Release date: March 29, 2013

Full review:
Hark back to taaki taaki and tap dance to tathaiyya as the (r)awful 80s are re-awakened from their garish grave and served re-heated; as old wine in an old bottle. Vintage? Not truly. Just as we thought Jeetendra's white shoes and coloured wigs were laid to rest in filmi museums, Sajid Khan dips into his cookie jar of movies, masti and 'naus-talgia' for yet another peek into the petty-past. Got himmat? Read on:

After years, Ravi aka Himmatwala, a big-city street-fighter, (Ajay) moves back to his village that's suffering the ruthless reign of Sher Singh (Mahesh). Singh terrifies the gaonwallahs by day, and sleeps with a sherni at night (a stuffed toy-tiger, before you Tiger Savers wake up). His bro-in-law Narayandas (Rawal, sporting a Goldilocks wig in grey) with a Kader Khan hangover (nicely done) is his partner-in-paap. While Himmatwala is on a revenge mission (maa kasam!), he falls in love with sher-ki-beti, Rekha, (Tamannah); who's a chori with most guts and the sexiest ghaaghra-cholis. Well, there's more melodrama: A weepy maa in white, a bechari behen (yes, she gets molested too); a gaon-ka-mandir (crucial to the climax. Hail 80s!) plus tons of dialogue-baazi (maa-ka-doodh, maa-behen ki kasam, et al). Lastly, Himmatwala also braves it with a Sher (thankfully not Singh, the real thing).

Ajay bends iron rods, fights tiger claws and takes the laws into his singham paws. Too much, huh? Well, that's our Himmatwala - 100% filmi! With bone-crushing action, power-packed dialogues and perfected herogiri - Ajay stays true to the title and does well. In her Bollywood debut, Tamannah makes a decent impression. She's superhot (her midriff demands a separate acting credit) and shows conviction, but later gets lost in transgression. Paresh Rawal entertains in parts, but often goes OTT. Thankfully, Mahesh Manjrekar's acting doesn't time travel and he evokes a few laughs.

In this remake, Sajid Khan's passion for the 80s kitsch is entertaining to begin with, but gets suffocating after a point. While few scenes (grand and outlandish) win ceetees, the rest try too hard to get any reaction. He also attempts 'Nazi'jokes, gay-gags and revisits Alfred Hitchcock's 'Psycho'(we braved this too!).

This one might impress the wannabe Himmatwalas out there. But it'll take more than himmat to go back to the gawdiest era of all. Rest, as they say, is history. Repeated!

AUSTRAIN 2012 BUDGET DEFICIT LOWER THAN EXPECTED

Vienna, March 29 : Austria's budget deficit for 2012 has proven significantly lower than the government expected, Statistics Austria said.
Standing at 2.5 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), or 7.7 billion euros ($9.87 billion), the deficit ended up below the finance ministry's Autumn forecast of 3.1 percent of the GDP and also puts it below the EU Stability and Growth Pact (SGP) target of 3 percent, reported Xinhua.
The nation's leading politicians praised the outcome, with Chancellor Werner Faymann saying the surprisingly low figure showed Austria was on the right track.
Finance Minister Maria Fekter thanked states and local councils for their "impressive budget discipline", and also the Austrian people.
The news was not all positive, however, with Austrian sovereign debt climbing to a new high of 227.4 billion euros or 73.4 percent of GDP, well over the SGP target of 60 percent, though it too was below the pr
evious prognosis, which was 74.6 percent.

VACCINE FOR HIV

Los Angeles, March 30 : American scientists have developed a new approach to vaccine design that could be useful against HIV and other viruses which change their structure quickly, says a new study.
The study, which appeared March 28 in Science Express, the early online edition of the journal Science, offers a step toward solving what has been one of the central problems of modern vaccine design: how to stimulate the immune system to produce the right kind of antibody response to protect against a wide range of viral strains, reports Science Daily.
The new technique for vaccine design has been developed by a team of scientists from the Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) and the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI).
Using the technique, the researchers engineered an immunogen (substance that induces immunity) that promises to reliably initiate an otherwise rare response effective against many types of Human Immunodeficiency Virus.
"We're hoping to test this immunogen soon in mice engineered to produce human antibodies, and eventually in humans," said team leader William R. Schief, an associate professor of immunology and memb
er of the IAVI Neutralizing Antibody Centre at TSRI.

TV CONTINUES TO ATTRACT

According to the findings of a study by BBC World News, television continues to the primary device for users on the news front, especially in `Breaking News' situations; notwithstanding the increasing usage of smartphones, tablets and PCs for hunting news.
The study, carried out by InSites Consulting, found that television continues to attract more people looking for news as compared to smartphones, tablets and PCs. While the usage of these other devices has increased considerably during the working day, the usage of TV soars dramatically in the evening.
The findings of the study - which was conducted across over 3,600 owners of digital devices in the US, Australia, Germany, France, Poland, Singapore, India, South Africa, and the UAE - revealed that, in `Breaking News' situations, 42 percent of the people turn to TV as their first device; with 66 percent of them then turning to the Internet to investigate the stories further.
Even though the study showed that TV has a clear lead over smartphones, tablets, and PCs on the news front, it has also pointed out that all the four mediums are more complementary in nature to one another instead of being rivals.
Noting that the study's findings debunk the speculation that "mainstream uptake of smartphones, laptops and tablets will have a negative impact on television viewing," BBC Global News CEO Jim Egan said: "This study has found that the four devices actually work well together, resulting in greater overall consumption rather than having a cannibalising effect.

EGOMANIAC BIEBER FORCES HIS VIDEOS ON ENTOURAGE

London, March 30 : Pop star Justin Bieber has reportedly become an egomaniac as now he doesn't have ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez to keep him grounded. He reportedly makes his entourage watch his videos over and over again.
The 19-year-old broke up with actress Gomez earlier this year, and without her guidance he hasn't been able to keep himself grounded, according to a report in femalefirst. co. uk.
A source revealed how Bieber has been reliving his 2011 appearance as the host on
"Saturday Night Live" by replaying the tape along with his own videos to his entourage on the tour bus.
"It's so awkward. I mean Bieber did a good job on the show, but no one wants to watch it again and again," femalefirst. co. uk quoted a source as saying.
"He makes us watch the videos again and again, but no one says anything. Gomez used to tell him what was up and it must have helped keep him grounded, because since they broke up his ego is out of control," the source added.
The source said that the 19-year-old doesn't act quite as cocky when he's around people he respects, but his entourage don't want to speak out.
"He never pulls that kind of stuff when Jayden Smith or someone else he respects is there, but when it's just his people on the bus he does it," the source said.
"He does the same thing with his videos. He'll have them running on a loop, and then when he sees a part he loves, he stops and rewinds it and makes everyone watch," the source added.

SHARMAN'S NEXT WAR COMEDY "WAR CHOD NA YAAR"

Mumbai, March 30 : Bollywood actor Sharman Joshi will soon start shooting for a war comedy "War Chod Na Yaar," a genre, which he says, is unique not only to Indian cinema but also to world cinema.
"The concept just took me. War comedy is unique, not only for Indian cinema but in terms of world cinema. At least in my experience, the time I have spent in seeing various movies, I have not seen a film on this line and concept," the 34-year-old said here Friday at a press meet held for the film.
"It says things of substance and importance in a very light, smart and piercing fashion. It's a film we all will be proud of," he added.
Talking about its story, Sharman said: "My character is of an Indian army captain. Basically it's about the relationship between the Indian and Pakistani soldiers on the border and how that relationship is challenged when the war is declared and then how they stop this war or cannot stop this war... that is what the story is about."
Being directed by Faraz Haider, "War Chod Na Yaar" also stars Jaaved Jaffrey, Soha Ali Khan and Mukul Dev.

WORLD'S FASTEST INTERNET (40 Gbps)

Researchers at the University of Southampton have developed a hollow-core fibre optic cable that has transmitted wavelength division, multiplexed data at 99.7 percent the speed of light in vacuum.

They claim to have increased the speed at which data can be transmitted over fibre optic cables, a link that forms the backbone of the internet.

If faster light can travel through a fibre, the potential latency of data transmission is lower. To compare, the solid silica glass fibre optic cables that are used today propagate light at some 69 percent the speed of light in a vacuum.

The trouble that is found with hollow-core fibers to transmit data is that these cables have struggled to keep up the combination of low loss, wide bandwidth and mode-coupling characteristics that is required for high capacity data transmission.

The researchers have claimed to achieve a required balance of these factors, with a recorded loss of 3.5dB per km, and using a 160nm bandwidth channel to transmit 37 WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) channels at 40Gbps which according to them is 1.54 microseconds/km faster than over conventional fibre.

Besides general benefit in faster transmission, wide bandwidth, low latency signal transmission links are in demand to increase the rate at which algorithmic financial trading can take place and as fast interconnects between components inside future exaflop-scale supercomputers.

SONA SPA REVIEW

Director:Makarand Deshpande
Writter:Rajiv Jain (Rajeev Jain)
Stars:Naseeruddin Shah,Aahana Kumrah,Shruti Vyas,Pooja Pradhan,Nivedita Bhattacharya,Vineet Sharma,Romi Jaispal,Devyani
Release date:22 March

Full review:
Some films go so rapidly from oh-my-god-can-this-really-be-true to such sublime awfulness that you are left transfixed. Sona Spa opens with a beatific-of-face, sonorous-of-voice Naseer telling us how humankind's most prized possession is sleep, and then propels us towards a 'spa' where girls 'do not sleep with you, but for you'. We are then introduced to a bunch of women who lie around in beds, attired in togas, in various stages of sleep-dream cycles, and then the film unleashes itself upon you.
Amongst its chief attractions is a lecher who is triple-timing his wife, and whose idea of getting rid of troublesome mistresses is to off them, one by one. Then there is a businessman who goes to dance bars and drinks, and slaps his daughter when she tries to stop him. There is also a poor soul who is in a coma, surrounded by sobbing daughters. And a cop on the take ( who also, if I caught that right, pretends to be a TV reporter). These sleep-deprived characters all have 'sleepers', with whom they 'bond', caressing each others' faces. No, I'm not having you on.
These are the 'sleepers': a former hooker with a Lucknawi andaaz, who is to be seen wearing flowing shararas , a jeans-clad, frizzy-haired loud-mouth, and a 'good' middle-class girl in a 'salwaar kameez'. The idea looks like it's been lifted from a sci fi book I read some years ago, but there really is no other similarity: Sona Spamade me recall famous Ajit jokes ( 'Mona ke saath sona'), and led me to random thoughts about good actors being used so badly that they cause unsurpassed hilarity. What was Naseer thinking?

CHASME BADDOOR

Director:David Dhawan
Writter:Sajid - Farhad (dialogues)
Release date:april 5

Full Review:
Once the king of comedy, David Dhawan, is going through a lean phase with his last big hit PARTNER in 2007! But looks like things will be back on track for the director with his next, CHASHME BADDOOR which happens to be a remake of the iconic hit film of the same name. Music of David's films has always been very entertaining and has garnered popularity, especially amongst the masses and youth. So let's check out if it happens this time too, with the aid of his trusted lieutenants, Sajid-Wajid.
First up is 'Har Ek Friend Kamina Hota Hai', a song that has already attracted attention because of its' addictive rhythm and humorous hook line, 'Har ek friend'borrowed from the famous cell-phone ad jingle, 'Har ek friend zaroori hota hai'. Rendered by the versatile Sonu Nigam whose emotive vocals and voice modulations are just right and suited to the theme of the movie. Helping the cause further are the apt lyrics by Kausar Munir that are superbly situational and a mirror of the characters of the lead protagonists.
Next up, 'Dhichkyaaon Doom Doom', by Ali Zafar and Shreya Ghoshal, is a light'chhed-chaad' or 'nok-jhonk' song between the two lead protagonists. The tune has its inspiration from quite a few of RD Burman's numbers like 'Chura Liya Hai' and even the arrangements hark back to the good old days of the seventies. Neelesh's lyrics are funny and very identifiable and the youth will definitely give it a thumps up.

There is a second version with Wajid and Shreya and it's not much different from the first.

The mood is once again retro, and this time it's Kishore Kumar and his house of music that inspires Sajid-Wajid for 'Early Morning', a number that is set in the same corridor as 'Mere Saamne Wali Khidki' (PADOSAN) . Kishore Da's much popular 'yodling' and rib tickling sounds are a testimony to our claim. However the USP of the song is the teaming of Sonu and Ali Zafar and superb lyrics by Jalees Sherwani, whose reference to Face book, Yahoo Messenger, BBM will be patronized by the youth and Gen X.

There is a remix version sung by Ali Zafar, 'Early Morning' complete with nice rhythmic rap and lovely female chorals and is a good hear.

From one fun number to another, 'Ishq Mohallah' is sung by Mika Singh and Wajid and the addictive chorus in the beginning reminds of Sajid-Wajid's very own chartbuster, 'Chammak Challo' (ROWDY RATHORE) which was in itself a Laxmikant-Pyarelal inspired composition. Once again it's Neelesh's zany, comical and apt lyrics that serves as the highlight of the track.

We next encounter another fun situational track, 'Andha Ghoda Race Mein Dauda, a song befits the mood/theme of the movie . Even though the song starts of as a soft, soothing fun track, it later transforms in to an all-out zany rock... Wajid and Ali Zafar along with Neuman Pinto are all in their elements and so is the lyricist Jalees Sherwani whose similes and proverbs are simply hilarious!

Summing up, the audio of CHASHME BADDOOR is targeted at the masses and youth and that is exactly where the response to the songs will come from, as evident from the popularity of 'Har Ek Friend'. However, the class and mass appeal of PARTNER and MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI is missing and especially since this is a remake of such a classy film, and with actors like Ali Zafar, Siddharth etc one expected more from the team.
